On Saturday we went to a local soccer game in San Jose to see Saprissa vs. Alajuela.  With Saprissa being the hometown team, we went to get some gear before the game.  We went to the game with four other missionary couples, all studying at the language school.  It rained a little in then first half, and our ponchos came in handy.  Saprissa won 2-1, but the big commodity was getting on the JumboTron…twice.  Apparently pro-Saprissa Gringos are a big deal.

The other exciting thing about the night was that we ate at McDonald’s before the game. While this doesn’t sound that special, real ketchup tastes so good after eating the Tico “salsa” ketchup for a few weeks.  We have a busy week ahead; we’ll be visiting La Carpio tomorrow (see Work and Ministries), volunteering at an orphanage Wed., and helping again with ESL on Thursday.  Hasta luego!

Yesterday Josh and I helped teach our first ESL class at Casa AMCA (a ministry center in San Jose run by a missionary couple).  Lindsey and Sean McCann took turns presenting, and then we split into small groups to answer questions and practice conversation.

Sean's family tree.

We have a beginner class of about 20 people, and the first lesson covered basic greetings and family members.  Halfway through, all the different classes come together to sing a song in English (This Little Light of Mine this week), read a Bible passage in English and Spanish, and hear a brief message in Spanish.  English gives a leg up for many kinds of work, so it’s an awesome combination of a valuable service (English education) and the preaching of the Gospel.  We’ll be mimicking the program in Honduras as well, so this is great preparation!
